Vector Control VFD 380-480 V for 1.5-450 kW Motors – XFC550 Series
The XFC550 is a high-performance vector control VFD (variable frequency drive) for three-phase 380-480 V mains, covering 1.5 kW to 450 kW in 27 ratings. It drives standard squirrel-cage AC induction motors with open-loop vector (SVC), closed-loop vector (FOC) or V/F control, so one drive family covers pump, fan, conveyor, compressor and machine-tool applications. The IP20 drive includes a built-in braking unit on models up to 22 kW, accepts RS485 Modbus RTU as standard, and takes IO, PLC and fieldbus expansion cards for panel integration. The XFC550 belongs to the industrial drives range we supply and support.
Key Features

Model coding: XFC550-3P4-1K50G-BEN-20 = series – 3P4 (3-phase 400 V class, 380-480 V) – 1K50 (motor 1.5 kW) – G (general load) – B (built-in braking unit) – E (LED panel) – N (no output reactor) – 2 (IP20) – 0 (standard design). If an application only needs starting and stopping current control rather than speed regulation, the built-in bypass soft starter or the heavy duty soft starter covers that duty at a lower cost.
Vector Control Performance: SVC, FOC and V/F
- Open-loop vector (SVC) – starting torque 0.3 Hz / 150%, speed range 1:200, speed accuracy ±0.5%.
- Closed-loop vector (FOC) – starting torque 0 Hz / 180%, speed range 1:1000, speed accuracy ±0.02%, torque accuracy ±5%; requires an encoder card and encoder feedback.
- V/F control – simple constant volts-per-hertz control for general fans and pumps.
Overload Capacity and Stall Control
The XFC550 provides 150% rated current for 60 s and 180% rated current for 3 s, which covers the starting and momentary torque of most pumps, fans and conveyors. High-performance over-current and over-voltage stall control automatically limits current and voltage during operation, avoiding fault trips caused by frequent load changes and adapting the drive to both hard and soft mechanical characteristics.
Built-in Braking for Fast Stops
Models up to 22 kW have a built-in braking unit and a BR braking resistor terminal, so a braking resistor can be connected directly for fast deceleration of high-inertia loads. On 30 kW and above an external braking unit is connected to the DC bus. For applications with frequent or long braking, size the braking resistor against duty and energy rather than motor power alone.
Four Sets of Motor Parameters
The drive stores four independent sets of motor parameters. Each set can be preset for a different motor (different power segment or process requirement), and switching is done through a digital input terminal during operation. This is a practical answer to VFD backup and replacement at site: the spare drive can be switched between machines without re-programming.
I/O Terminals and Expansion Cards
- Standard I/O: 5 multi-function digital inputs (one supports 100 kHz pulse), 2 analog inputs (0-10 V or 0-20 mA, jumper selectable), 2 open-collector outputs (one supports 100 kHz square wave), 1 analog output (0-10 V / 0-20 mA), 1 relay output (1 NO + 1 NC).
- IO expansion card – adds 5 digital inputs, 1 analog input, 1 relay output, 1 open-collector output and 1 analog output, with CAN interface.
- PLC expansion card – turns the drive into a PLC + VFD combination (Mitsubishi-compatible programming environment), 5 DI / 1 AI / 2 relay outputs / 1 AO / RS485.
- Encoder expansion card – for closed-loop FOC with differential, OC-interface or resolver encoders.
RS485 Modbus RTU and Fieldbus Options
RS485 Modbus RTU is standard (station address 1-249, 0 as broadcast, response delay 0-20 ms, 8-N-1 framing). For plant-wide networking, Profibus-DP, CANopen and EtherCAT expansion cards give real-time reading of all function codes and fieldbus control. The PLC card adds a second RS485 channel for the machine level.
How to Select the Right XFC550 Rating
- Use the motor nameplate: rated power (kW) and rated current (A).
- Match the XFC550 rated output current to the motor full-load current, not the kW alone.
- For constant-torque loads (conveyors, extruders, hoists) keep the general-duty (G) rating at or above motor current; for variable-torque fans and pumps the same rating usually has enough margin.
- Check starting torque and duty cycle; for high-breakaway-torque starts consider the next larger rating or contact us with the load data.
If the machine runs continuously at fixed speed and only needs smooth starting, a smart soft starter or built-in bypass soft starter starter is the lower-cost alternative; the XFC550 pays back where speed regulation or torque control is required.
Applications
- Water supply, booster and sewage pumps with pressure or level control
- HVAC fans, cooling towers and exhaust systems (energy saving by speed regulation)
- Air compressors, blowers and vacuum pumps
- Belt conveyors, feeders and elevators (SVC/FOC torque control)
- Textile, printing, food and packaging machinery
- Machine tools, extruders and mixers with encoder feedback (FOC)

FAQ
What is the difference between a VFD and a soft starter?
A soft starter only reduces current and torque during start/stop; the motor always runs at mains speed. A VFD (variable frequency drive) changes the output frequency and voltage, so the motor speed and torque are controlled continuously – this gives energy saving on fans and pumps and precise speed control on machines.
Which motors can the XFC550 drive?
Standard three-phase squirrel-cage AC induction motors. In SVC mode it delivers 150% torque at 0.3 Hz with a 1:200 speed range; in FOC mode with encoder feedback it delivers 180% torque at 0 Hz with a 1:1000 range, suitable for positioning and heavy starting duty.
Does the XFC550 include a braking function?
Models up to 22 kW have a built-in braking unit with a BR terminal for a braking resistor, so high-inertia loads can be stopped quickly. Models of 30 kW and above use an external braking unit connected to the DC bus.
Which communication options are available?
RS485 Modbus RTU is standard. Profibus-DP, CANopen and EtherCAT expansion cards are available for fieldbus networks, and IO and PLC expansion cards extend the digital/analog I/O and add machine-level programming.
What is the overload capacity of the XFC550?
150% rated current for 60 s and 180% rated current for 3 s. Stall control automatically limits current and voltage during operation to avoid nuisance trips.
What is the protection rating?
The XFC550 is IP20 rated and designed for indoor panel or cabinet mounting with adequate cooling space.
Can one XFC550 run several different motors?
Yes – four sets of motor parameters can be preset and switched by digital input during operation. This is commonly used for VFD backup and replacement across several machines, not for driving multiple motors at the same time.
How do I choose the right XFC550 model?
Select by motor rated current and power. The 27 ratings run from 1.5 kW / 4 A to 450 kW / 822 A output current; general-duty (G) models cover most applications. Send us the motor nameplate and duty if you need confirmation.
