XST260 Smart Soft Starter 220/380/480 V – Smooth Start, Pump Control and Built-in Bypass
The XST260 is a smart low-voltage soft starters for squirrel-cage three-phase AC motors from 7.5 kW to 400 kW. It combines SCR phase control with a built-in bypass contactor and a built-in current transformer, so panel builders do not need to select or wire those parts separately. The wide mains range (220 V / 380 V / 480 V ±10%, 50/60 Hz) means one model family covers the grids most often met in export projects, and the same part number can be used on 220 V, 380 V and 480 V installations. Unlike a general-purpose soft starter, the XST260 also includes pump, fan and conveyor functions: pump start/stop curves, pump cleaning, dynamic and static braking, low-speed forward/reverse jogging and motor pre-heating.
Key Features
- Built-in bypass contactor and current transformer – lower cabinet cost, less wiring, smaller panel.
- Pump control package – pump start curve, pump stop curve (anti-water-hammer), pump cleaning and low-speed jogging for blocked-rotor relief.

Model coding: XST260-0024-03-0-A = series – rated current – voltage class 03 (220/380/480 V) – keypad type (0: LED, 1: TFT-LCD) – machine type (A: standard). For control cabinet projects, pair the XST260 with the rest of your industrial drives; if you need a compact starter with strong Modbus integration, the Modbus RTU soft starter is the closest alternative in the same family.
Start and Stop Control Modes
- Voltage ramp start – smooth acceleration for high-inertia loads with adjustable start voltage and ramp time.
- Current ramp / current limit start – limits starting current between 100% and 500% of rated current; starting time settable 0-60 s.
- Pump start control – special curve for pump loads to reduce current surge at start.
- Direct start – full-voltage start when the application requires it.
- Stop modes – voltage ramp stop, pump stop curve (reduces water hammer), brake and free stop; stopping time settable 0-60 s.
Recommended starting frequency is no more than 10 starts per hour. For pump, fan and conveyor plants the same control concept is covered by our soft starters for pump, fan and compressor duty range, while the heavy duty soft starter family adds very high starting torque for crushers and mixers.
Pump Control for Water Pumps
Pump systems suffer fluid shock and surge during motor start and stop. The XST260 pump functions control load current on both transitions to extend pump life:
- Pump starting control – manages the start current of pump loads to avoid pressure surge.
- Pump stop control – follows a pump stop curve to reduce the water-hammer effect when the pump shuts down.
- Pump cleaning – automatic forward/reverse cleaning cycles remove siltation and prevent blocked-rotor faults.
- Low-speed forward/reverse jogging – lets an operator clear a partially blocked impeller before starting.
Braking and Low-Speed Jogging for Fans and Conveyors
- Dynamic braking – brings high-inertia fans and large rotating loads to a fast stop, solving long coast-down times.
- Static braking – holds a fan that is rotating from external wind so it can be started safely.
- Low-speed forward and reverse – on belt conveyors, jams can be driven back and forth at low speed to relieve the blockage before a normal start.
Protection Functions and Fault Codes
The XST260 has 19 protection functions. When protection acts, the starter stops immediately and shows the fault code on the LED display (or the fault name on the LCD display):
- Overcurrent, electronic thermal overload, underload, blocked rotor
- Input phase loss, phase current imbalance, phase sequence error
- Overvoltage, undervoltage, machine overheating, motor overheat, starting timeout
- Thyristor short-circuit / soft-starter input-output short circuit, external fault input, communication fault
Fault codes run from E01 to E20; common examples: E01 main supply phase loss, E06 electronic thermal overload, E07 phase sequence error, E15/E16 over/undervoltage, E19 motor overtemperature. The last 20 faults are stored in the history records for later analysis.
RS485 Modbus Communication and Fieldbus Expansion
The XST260 communicates over RS485 with standard Modbus RTU frames (function codes 03, 04 and 06). Up to 32 units can be connected on one network; the slave address is settable 1-32 (factory 1) and the baud rate 2400 / 4800 / 9600 / 19200 (factory 9600). A 120 ohm terminating resistor should be fitted at both ends of the AB bus on multi-unit networks. For PLC or SCADA integration the Modbus RTU soft starter is the most communication-focused model in the CMC range; the XST260 adds fieldbus expansion cards (Profibus-DP, EtherCAT, CANopen) when an industrial network requires them.
How to Select the Right XST260 Rating
- Take the motor nameplate current (FLA), not only the power in kW.
- Choose the XST260 rating whose rated current is equal to or above the motor full-load current.
- For standard (outside-delta) wiring the table above already applies a 1.5 x current margin; for internal (inside-delta) connection the starter current can be reduced to 1/√3 of line current, allowing a smaller rating.
- Derate for altitude above 2000 m and for ambient temperatures near the 40 °C limit.
If the duty is a crusher, mixer or screw conveyor with high breakaway torque, ask about the heavy duty soft starter instead; for standard motors up to 630 kW with built-in bypass, the built-in bypass soft starter covers the top of the power range.
Applications
Typical installations for the XST260 include:
- Water supply and booster pumps, irrigation, sewage and drainage
- HVAC fans, exhaust fans and high-inertia blowers (braking to shorten stop time)
- Belt conveyors and feeder lines (low-speed jogging to clear jams)
- Compressors, mixers and general production machinery
See our project references for similar installations we have supplied and commissioned.
FAQ
Does the XST260 have a built-in bypass contactor and current transformer?
Yes. The bypass contactor and the current transformer are integrated in the starter, so no external bypass or external CT is needed. This saves cabinet space, wiring time and component cost.
Which voltages and frequencies does the XST260 accept?
The XST260 accepts three-phase AC220V / 380V / 480V ±10% at 50/60 Hz. The 03 voltage class covers all three grids, so the same model can be used on 220 V, 380 V or 480 V systems.
What is pump control on the XST260?
The XST260 has a dedicated pump start curve, a pump stop curve that reduces the water-hammer effect, an automatic pump cleaning function and low-speed forward/reverse jogging. These functions protect the pump from surge during start/stop and clear siltation before it causes blocked-rotor faults.
Does the XST260 support braking?
Yes. Dynamic braking stops high-inertia fans quickly; static braking holds a fan that is rotating under external wind so it can be restarted safely.
What communication does the XST260 support?
RS485 Modbus RTU is standard (slave address 1-32, up to 32 units per network, baud rates 2400 to 19200). Profibus-DP, EtherCAT and CANopen expansion cards are available on request.
Can the keypad be installed remotely?
Yes. The keypad is removable and can be led out to the cabinet door through the RJ45 interface. LED and TFT-LCD panels are both available.
What is the protection rating?
IP00 on models up to 55 kW and IP20 on models from 75 kW up. Units up to 55 kW use natural cooling; 75 kW and above use forced-air cooling. Wall mounting with adequate ventilation space is required.
How do I select the right XST260 model?
Match the model rated current to the motor nameplate current. The 20 ratings run from 18 A to 780 A for 7.5 kW to 400 kW motors at 380 V standard wiring; internal (inside-delta) connection allows a smaller rating because the starter current is 1/√3 of the line current.
